The answer, first. A copper-binding tripeptide, alanyl-histidyl-lysine, first tested on hair follicles in 2007 and sold since as a scalp and skin ingredient. The strongest evidence is for topical peptides for wrinkles, graded C — small or open-label human only.

Independent 2026 meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials: pooled wrinkle effect mean difference 0.27, P=0.04, driven mainly by the oral subgroup at 1.5 4.

No AHK-Cu arm in any of them. Every other use — hair growth, skin collagen and wrinkles, copper delivered into skin — grade D or E: animal or mechanism data with no controlled human outcome.

What is AHK-Cu used for?

Hair growth, mostly, and it appears in some skin serums. The entire indexed primary record is one 2007 study from Seoul National University.

AHK-Cu lengthened excised human hair follicles in organ culture and made dermal papilla cells proliferate, at picomolar to nanomolar concentrations. That grades D, because organ culture is not a person. Nothing has tested AHK-Cu on a living scalp, and nothing has tested it on skin at all.

How is AHK-Cu used?

Descriptively, and labelled as such. There is no published human protocol, because there is no published human study. The one primary paper dosed excised follicles and cultured cells at picomolar to nanomolar concentrations.

As reported on hair-loss forums between 2012 and 2026, the convention is a daily scalp serum somewhere around 0.05% to 0.2%. It is usually blended with GHK-Cu and often applied under minoxidil rather than instead of it.

How long does AHK-Cu take to work?

No trial has measured that, in any species. The only study ran in a dish and on excised tissue, over days. It reported follicle elongation, not anything a person would see in a mirror.

As reported, users describe three to six months before claiming a change. That is roughly one hair cycle, and roughly the window in which regression to the mean does its own work.

Is AHK-Cu the same as GHK-Cu?

No. One residue differs: alanine where GHK-Cu has glycine. They chelate copper through similar chemistry, which is why the marketing treats them as interchangeable, and why the evidence does not.

GHK-Cu has three randomised human trials across forty years, two of them negative. AHK-Cu has one indexed primary study, in organ culture. Borrowing a cousin's literature is the single most common error made about this compound.
